Short Summary
On the hottest day of the summer, Daisy and Gatsby's affair is brought out into the open as Tom confronts Gatsby in the Park Plaza Hotel in New York City. Wilson also discovers that his wife, Myrtle is having an affair with another man, and Nick reflects that Tom and Wilson are in the exact same position — regardless of their differences in class. During the confrontation between Gatsby and Tom, Tom reveals that Gatsby has acquired his fortune through organized crime. This is a turning point in the argument, as Daisy, in love with Gatsby only a few hours previously, begins to slowly draw away from him making it clear that she will never leave Tom. On their way back from New York City, Jordan, Nick, and Tom discover that their has been an accident in front of Wilson's gas station in which Myrtle was hit by a big yellow car and killed instantly. Once they have returned back to the Buchanan mansion, Nick discovers Gatsby hiding in the bushes. Gatsby reveals that Daisy had been driving, but that he will take the blame for Myrtle's death. Nick leaves Gatsby alone in the moonlight keeping his vigil over Daisy, much as Nick first encountered Gatsby reaching out towards the green light on Daisy's dock at the beginning of the novel.
